Method of learning the guitar?

I had been learning guitar for a year and then stopped for about 2 years. I decided to start to play again, but not to classes. I would just teach myself. Or they have free classes online. I can easily share a tab and learn to play a song in time. Confine to learn many of my favorite songs to help me become a better guitar player? or is it necessary?

A man who used to play with played for many years. Took some lessons, but decided to stop and just learn the songs they were playing. That was very good, but he did better. I always taught him the songs, but I never seemed to develop as I think you may have. A year or two after they stopped playing, I said he wished he had kept taking classes and learning the basics instead of learning songs. Thus, one could have imagined the songs without relying me, other musicians, or the Internet to teach him. It would have been better able to write original songs, too. I took guitar lessons for eight years. The only reason I stopped was because I had to start working. I started with the basics and theory and can now play almost any song I listen without looking online. Take from that what you want.
